TJ is almost 2 years old and is not talking yet. He will make noises and mumble things under his breath, but not ask or tell us what he wants. Any suggestion on how we can get him to talk?

We talk to him all the time and tell him the names of things. He does point at what he wants. I talked to the doc and he isn't worried about him not talking. We had his hearing checked and its just fine. I think he is just being a stubborn lil boy.

How often do you talk to him? Have you had his hearing checked? Did you ask your doctor about it? Sometimes they can offer advice and ideas when we can't think of any. You could ask him about local programs, or contact state disability. They could probably test him for you for free, if you think something is wrong. You'd probably have to go through your doctor first, but not always. It's worth it to see if he is okay, or if he just needs a bit more help learning in a different way :)

You can look into an early intervention program in your area. They do home visits with therapists and the cost is based on income (it really depends on your state). This same program do teach classes to parents on communication to help their children communicate. the program is to help children that are developmentally delayed. They serve a large population of children that have a myriad of delays or disabilities. It is a great program. My friend enrolled her daughter that was 15 months old and not even standing and within three months they had her walking. They do have speech therapists as well. If you have not talked to your pediatrician, you may want to do it as he might have some other ideas as well. Teaching kids signing is helpful with communication, it cuts down on tantrums and frustration.
