In England there is no rule. Most car seats are designed to be rear facing until the child is about 9 months or to tall for the seat.

Laws are different depending where you live. I live in Australia and they have just raised the age for all child restraints.
I believe you now have to keep your child rear facing until they are two, in the baby chair until they are four and in the booster seat until they are 6 or 8 yrs old (not sure), but obviously the theory is that children do require more protection so if you can, keep your child rear facing for as long as possible.

All the best

The laws are not the same in other countries. Just thought we should remember that.

It is one year according to the law. I believe there are some weight restrictions as well.

It is a good idea to keep them rear facing as long as possible beyond one year though. Their neck muscles aren't really strong enough to deal with the forces from an impact. If they are rear facing, the seat absorbs most of the force.

Hope this helps.

It depends on where you live but the chances of your child being internally decapitated in an accident facing forward are higher than the chances of them breaking a leg facing the rear. At a year they are still not strong enough to keep their heads back should you be in a crash. I hope my daughter likes that back window she will be seeing it for a while. But hey its your kids.

by LAW it's 1 yr. However, ppl are rallying to keep them rear facing until at least 2.
