I am the mother of an over energetic 2 year old who does not like to sleep. He non stop runs around all day and he does not have a very long attention span. i was just wondering if this is normal for his age.

Oh yes! This is very normal.  My oldest daughter, who will turning 5 in a couple of wks is still over energetic & high maitenance as well as my 3yr old daughter!  The only one that is low key is my 1yr old.  Funny how that is, isn't it?  Just put his energy to good use, as much as a 2yr old can do.

Yes! My 2 yr old son hasn't stopped moving since he figured out how to in the womb! I'm still wondering if he will ever slow down

my daughter was and still the same way. trying to get her to sleep was a nightmare, but ive learned that turning off the tv atleast an hour befor bed then 20 mins befor bed turning down the lights and just talking to her has deffinetly helped. during the day in the winter i have a box of art stuff, playdhoo, and blocks. i put one of her cd's on while she does her thing and for me it helps.

Hi Stephanie,

My son is 3 and a half years old and he has been over energetic since he was about 6 months old. Some babies are just like that though I have started wondering if that is normal too. At 2 years old I couldn´t even go to the mall with him because he just run away from me. It was quite disappointing. Then he got better in some aspects and began with new things that bother me, such as responding all the time and not obeying me.

Try to keep him busy and if you can, walk with him a lot, that helps them focus in an activity. I walk with my son everyday and talk to him about what we are seing, such as birds, trees, houses...They pay attention to that.

Just be patient, and try to see this as a normal phase of his development. A psychologist told me that we shouldn´t worry about them being hyper active until they are about 6 or 7 years old. So just let´s hope for them to calm down in a year or two.

Good luck, you are not alone.

Yes...this is very normal!  At least for me it is..although with my daughter (who will be 2 in a couple weeks), this started for her as soon as she could walk when she was 12 months old!  She hasn't stopped!  She will run around all day long (although, she still takes 1 nap a day--for now), and she definitely keeps me on my toes!!

Welcome to the terrible two's, hehe. I think this is the age where, if you haven't already, you lose the baby weight. They have more energy than they can burn off and it's running you ragged! If you can, get him in a playgroup or mommy and me classes or even a walk around the mall. It's better in the spring/summer when you can go outside and to the park so he can wear himself out. Hang in there. I know it's tough but you'll find something that will entertain him and you'll both have peace!
