I think Jake was about 10 months or so when he started helping put toys back in the baskets. He was closer to 18 months when he started putting toys back on the shelves (b/c I liked them to go in certain places or they wouldn't all fit).
I didn't start taking toys away if he didn't help until he was about 2 years old. Cher, I don't think that's harsh at all, I do the same thing with my son who is 5 now, unless it is a really big mess, like after he's had friends over, in which case I help him, but only by giving him directions on where to start and what to do next. :)

Probably about the same as Rebecca, from the time my kids could move around by themselves they help me pack up their toys. Samuel is 4, and now knows that he has to pack up without my help, though Elise does help him (1). If he is in a bad mood and doesn't pack up...anything I have to do he doesn't get to play with the next day.
Is that too harsh?

From the time mine could crawl I got them to help me to pick them up and made a game of it and slowly I stopped doing as many and got them to do more.....
