My three year old son was going potty every day, he was coming to me and letting me he had to potty, then about two months ago that stopped, and now every time I put him on the potty he screams and cries and throws a fit until he is off. Does anyone have some advise?

Brittni has a very good point.

My son loved stickers and cars so I made a daily-weekly chart and for everytime he went potty he got to put a new sticker up on the chart. At the end of the week we would review the chart and he would get a great reward like going to the big kids' park or taking a trip to visit his cousins. More immediate rewards were treat or a celebratory hug and dance.

In addition to this, we had a potty chair that held a toilet paper role on one side (the doors slid shut) and a place to put toys and card books on the other. This made it fun for him to want to go, and I was always accross the hall if he needed help so he also got to have a little bit of privacy and "Me time".

reward him for going potty...my sister did this with her kids. make a chart and set goals for your little one...1 for going peepee and one for going poopoo...tell him he can put a sticker on the chart everytime he was a good boy and went on the potty and when the chart was filled he could get a prize for his hard and good work :) hope it helps :P

Big life changes, baby, new school, new home, new sitter, visit from relatives, can wreak havoc on this. Did he maybe pinch something? You will need a new chair or seat then. Could he possibly be constipated or have a UTI? I would suggest looking at the big picture and talking with his doctor to rule out a physiological problem. In the meantime, just back of and ask him if he needs to use the potty anytime you need to use the toilet. Keep the pressure off and he will come back around.

Good luck.

Could something have happened that has made him afraid of the potty or a change in his life? We moved last year to a new city and when that happened, my daughter regressed and started to pee her pants again. It took a couple months for her to stop. I am in the process of trying to potty train my son and have learned that going potty (when & where) is one of the few things he can control. One day he screamed anytime I got him near his potty. I backed off for a couple days and found out if I gave him a little more control of the situation, he is more willing to go sit on the potty. This means I had to keep him in pull ups but he has told me more often when he needs to go.

Do you use the big potty or a potty chair? Maybe try to teach him to go standing up? Or switch to using the big potty with one of the smaller seat things that you can get at walmart, they are smaller, soft, and fun!

I used squares of toilet paper when potty training my two eldest sons. Being boys, they loved thinking of it as a "gun", and sinking the "battleship". They also tend, around 3 years old, to think of it as part of themselves. I was grateful that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were popular and lived in the sewer. I still see my boys waving at their pee and saying, "Bye-bye, pee! Go play with the Turtles!"
