I am having a hard time keeping my kids in bed for both nap time and bedtime. When evening comes around I usually let them watch a TV show, feed them, give them a bath and read them a story before putting them down for bed. Still they get up, run around and refuse to sleep. Are there any ideas of what else needs to be done or added to their routine? I am so tired that any and all help is appreciated! Thanks!

1. No sugar or caffeine 3-4 hours before bedtime.
2. No TV before bedtime (too much stimulation in their thoughts).
3. Read story in their bed, under the covers. Make sure potty-times, sips of water, sleepy bear, blanky, or whatever else is needed is done with before story starts. (No excuses for getting up.)
4. Explain that there is no choice on following the rules. The rule is no getting out of bed. So you might have to devote that next 2 hours to standing outside their bedroom door to "escort" them back into their bed every single time they make the wrong choice to break your rule. After a night or 2 of consistency, you should be able to relax after story time.
Remember, if you tell them to go to bed, but there is no consequences to getting out of bed, they won't stay in the bed, and they also learn that your words are of little value.
Sorry to stick it you, but I've been there. I know you deserve time for yourself after being a mom all day, so stick it out and get tough!

Two hour nap is to long with bed time five hours away. Have dinner earlier so he can play and avoid TV time before bed. No sugar before bed time.

Thanks Katy I appreciate all the hep! I didn't even think of standing outside their door! They get consequences for not napping but what do you do for not going to bed when they are supposed to! It's almost their bedtime so I will start that today! :D

He fools around for an hour and a half. Running from room to room or trying to come downstairs. I had to put the gate up on the door and close the door for bedtime today. It worked on him not getting out but he just goofed around or screamed.

Thanks Sarah! My sons bedtime is 7 so are you saying I should try to put him down at 6? If so I will try it out. My son takes one nap usually 2 hours long from 12-2. Is that too long? Might that be the reason he won't stay in his room at all?
