Refusing baby food

Andrea - posted on 07/06/2009 ( 13 moms have responded )

My son is almost 10 months and it was difficult to get him to eat baby food and cereal from the start but we finally got him to accept it. Then he just decided that he will not eat it anymore. If I manage to get it into his mouth he spits it out. He accepts cherrios, puffs, teething biscuits, and table food but he just can not eat a lot of it. He has 6 teeth and may have more coming. I would be so happy for any advice.

get rid of the baby food all together, my 3 children were put on solids from 6 weeks. mashed potatos and pumpkin carrots, and any other vegies u can think of. try plain biscuits in some milk to make it soggy and give it to him in the morning, if needed add a little bit of sugar to make it a bit sweet. dont listen to any of the books about feeding, and dont worry if he chokes a bit the 1st time, we all had to eat "real" food at some stage

my 6 mo refuses pureed food, but will eat toast and banana if he can hold on to it and feed himself. he never has really liked mushy food!

I agree with the other mom's as long as he is getting enough formula/breastmilk......table food is just fine for a 10mo. old....My youngest did the same thing...He's 4 now and loves to try all kinds of new foods.....My pediatrician is a big advocate of making your own baby food, which is so easy.....But now that your son has teeth, he can start to explore new textures and flavors:)........Just make sure that he is sitting and you can monitor him eating....You and your son have fun with this new exciting adventure:)

My daughter did the same thing....she was just ready to eat real food and be done with the baby food. Once I started giving her things that we were eating (just cut up really small) she got her appetite back :)

my son never took to it and the dr. switched him to table foods that were safe. he told me that the front teeth were for biting and they didnt really get their chewing teeth for a while but that their gums were strong enough to chew. baby food and infant sippy cups are more for practice and things not for real intake. they get most of their calories and things from formula still.

my son always refused baby food!! he hated sitting in a high chair and having someone feed him. i just made him sandwiches and cut up fruit and veggies for him gave him crackers etc. one thing i did do tho was put pureed fruit such as pears and baby custard ... that you get in tins for 4 months+ and put them into sippy cups for him and he enjoyed that. but when he was about one i brought him a little table and chairs and he sits at that and feeds himself he will eat baby food out of a bowl with a spoon so i think the whole problem with my son is that he just wanted to feed himself.. maybe you should try this out because it worked well for me and you can get a table and chair set for around $20 so they aren't that expensive!

My baby girl has refused to eat baby food for months now! She still breastfeeds and we just feed her whatever we are eating because it is what she wants and there is nothing wrong with that; she's 10 months old and I'm actually glad she eats whatever we give her because she's happy and growing and we save money not having to buy baby foods :)

wow, still on baby food at 10 months! i personally waited untill my respective other was home to mind my boy,and just cooked for the whole day, in a crock pot, all veges and in other pans the meat (seperatly) then i would wiz it up to the right consistancy and freeze it all down in frezzer bags or jars. it would last up to a month depending how much i cooked :o) and found it alot cheaper in the long run.

Your son made it longer on baby food then mine did. He is 10 months 1 wk old, and started refusing baby food at 6 months. I had to switch him to table food because he would not eat baby food any longer. I just cut the stuff in bite size pieces and just keep an eye on him. He only has the bottom two front teeth. He does a really good job chewing things up. The only thing I do not give him is steak, just because it is a little tough to chew. I wouldn't worry too much about him refusing the baby food.

My son was the same way! At 10 mos he stopped eating all babyfood. We just gave him table food from then on! I strated with mashed potatoes and things that we could mash up...but soon he was eating everything we were eating! Oh, and he didn't have any teeth until 11 mos...that never stopped him:)

Hi Andrea,

I was always told from my mom, mother in law, and grandmother that once you feed the kids any kind of table to just give up on feeding them baby food again because they want eat it again. If he is still on formula then I would not be to worry about how much regular food he is taking in because he is still getting all what he needs with the formula. Also remember that the size of his little stomach is the size of his little fist so he will not eat that much at first. Hope that this helps you out a little bit. Good Luck! Also your little man is soo cute.

At 10 months its ok for him to be on table food, and snacks, as long as hes eatting enough formula/breastmilk it doesnt matter the amount of soild food a child eats under the age of 1.
