rice cereal vs oatmeal cereal

my 5 1/2 month old doesnt seem to be enjoying the rice cereal anymore, is it ok to switch them to oatmeal? what is the reason for rice first?

We use oatmeal.  I started with rice cereal but it  caused constipation.  My doctor told me to switch.  My daughter LOVES theh oatmeal.

Rice cereal is the easiest cereal for your wee one to digest it is also the least likely to cause any allergy reactions. When my 2 were wee - 3 years ago, you only had to try each cereal for a week before introducing the next... I say go for it.

they say that the rice is blander and less likley to cause alergies. but you only need to wait about a week in between new foods...if you haven't noticed a reaction then go ahead and try something else. my kids were eating all 3 kinds by 4 months and they are fine.

Rice is a more simple carb, so it breaks down easier. My kids hated rice cereal. I use it as a thickener for stage 1 & 2 baby food. It's too thin for my kids so I thicken it with rice cereal.

They love oatmeal cereal.

My daughter had the same problem so we spoke to the doctor and he said give her what she likes, so she has been on oatmeal cereal and till date she wouldn't eat rice cereal but I suggest you to retry after couple of weeks. we kept on trying for 2 month ans then we gave up.

My son didn't care for cereal by itself and I don't blame him. It's kind of blah so I mixed it with other things. I would make it with formula and then add a little babyfood (fruit). I also added mashed banana or when he was older I mixed it with juice instead of formula. He started eating rice cereal at 4 months and oatmeal at 6 months. They sell the rice and oatmeal cereal with bananas now and that helps to flavor it too.

Hi,  the only reason they say rice first is because it is usually well accepted by all with little allergic reactions.  Usually you wait 2 weeks before introducing a new food but if there are no food allergies in your family you should be fine.  Remember rice tends to bind you up while oatmeal causes really loose stools so I always start with rice then add oatmeal to it so you don't have either problem.  If your little one still doesn't like the taste, try adding either formula or breastmilk to it instead of water.
