My Three year old Drake has been running a fever for 11 days. We had tests done yesterday but the only thing abnormal was a high white count which means its a virus of some kind. They told me they want to wait until monday to see if he is better before they do anything else. I know there isnt much I can do but what do you think? Should I take him to the ER if his fever gets high again? Im just really worried.

We are in the hospital now. They finally admitted him two days ago. They have been running a bunch of tests but they seem to think it is probably juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. He did have some other tests come back high so they will redo them as an outpatient and if they are high again we will be referred to a specialist. We probably wont know much for a few days until the blood cultures come back but I will keep you posted. Thank you for being so concerned.

This is my story of my son...
He had a cold for about 5 days. 2 days after being better he was running around playing while i started supper. All of a sudden he started screaming at the top of his lungs and seemed to be in pain. This was at 5pm. At 6:30pm i went to the store and when i came back my husband said he had given our son his bath and he was shivering the whole time and screaming. I took his temperature and it was 104.3. I told my husband ot take him to the ER and i would stay at home with our daughter, she was 4 motnhs and i didn't want her in a hospital while the swine flu was kicking in to high gear in our area.
The DR at the ER sent my husband home and said it was just a cold and to keep giving him Tylenol and it would be gone in a day or 2. the next day his fever was high still jsut not 104...the 2nd day it was 104.7 so this time I went back to the ER and i told the DR on i wasn't leaving the hospital until I had a reason for my son to be this way. I told her he wasn't acting normal and i didn't care how many kids she saw in the run of a day, i knew my son best and i knew there was something wrong. 15 minutes later he had an x-ray and his whole cheast was white, which is pnemonia for anyone who doens't know what it means. There wasn't one spot on his chest that wasn't white. I was livid! They also tested for H1N1 and it came back positive. They treated him for the pnemonia first and it cleared up in a couple of days and the flu was gone a few days after and he didn't need any medication for it. 2 weeks alter when the flu clincs opened in my area i was in line with my son to get the vaccine.

We as mothers know our kids better then anyone and no one should tell us our kids are fine when WE see them EVERYDAY. The Dr wasn't the same one that my husband saw 2 days earlier but she apoligized for not catching it sooner and said she has learned from it and would start to pay closer attention to people as they came in especially with the swine flu going around. It was so bad where i am,on a military base, they set up a barracks for people who had it and they were in quarintine for 10 days. This "camp" was set up 3 weeks after my son got infected and was such a good thing for them to do here to restrict it.
If i was you i would be in there and staying until they had someone to do the tests they are waiting to do. A temperature of that high can be very dangerous and should not go past 3 days untreated. Go to another hospital if possible! We have one by our base and another one in the major city 10 minutes away so if no one wanted to help me at one i would go to the other for sure.
Good luck and keep us updated on how it goes.

Absoulutly. Just keep taking him, take him to another ER if you have to, keep on. I will be thinking of you and your child, please keep us posted!

His fever has been between 99.5 to 103.5. Ive never heard of using elderberry syrup. Where do you get it and how much do you give them?

I WOULD! 11 days is a long time to have a fever. being a cna we are taught that this is not normal. i would definitely not hesitate to take him in if nothing else to ease your mind. most doctors understand that we moms know when something is not right and listen to us. if they dont, i get a new doctor. YOU know your child better than ANYONE else. if you feel in your gut its right to take him in, do it. it cant hurt to double check. please let us know what happens. good luck and i hope this helps.
