Awwww, I'm sorry. But, what a proud mom you must be all at once. :) I'm a certified military brat, my dad was in the army and my husband is in the air force, 13 years to be exact. I'm no expert, but from what I know many young men and women find a happy place in their chosen branch of service. They lead wonderful lives, make families, travel the world and use their position to enhance the well being of others near and far. Basic will be a challenge, but there will be many other young people with things in common. Staying in the dorms or barracks will be similar to dorm life in college from what I hear. I'm sure you know that the career ladder provides a great deal of opportunity, he will go on to healthcare, income, hot meals, challenges, new friends and fun.
Write him while he's away, email him if he has access to that, attend his graduation if you can & give him sound advise about dating/marriage. That's a pitfall of many young soldiers. Other than that, I think everything will fall into place. I wish you and your young soldier all the best. Feel free to write anytime, if you just need to say you miss him today, that's fine. You have a listening ear and a kind heart here.
