Starting Solids...

Gema - posted on 03/11/2010 ( 4 moms have responded )

I've decided to start feeding my 5 month old solids. We're on day 2 with infant rice cereal and I just can't seem to get my baby to open her mouth. What can I do to encourage her to open her mouth and try new foods?

If she tasted it and didn't like it my son liked oatmeal instead of rice cereal. But he wasn't as fond of food until 5 months old. So wait and try again if she doesn't like it.

Did she taste it at all? If she did maybe she just didnt like it. My daughter hated the taste of baby-rice untill I put a bit of pureed apple it with it. You could also try dipping your (clean) finger in it for her to take just to get her to taste it to start with. Or you could try giving her an extra spoon to play with and just dip it in the food now and then. ( Its bound to go in her mouth at some point, knowing babies!) Good luck.

Some babies aren't ready until six months. It also takes awhile for them to get used to eating solids. Try feeding her at her lunchtime meal before you give her a bottle. Make sure them cereal is really thin and that you make it with formula or breastmilk so it will taste familiar. Once she starts accepting it, you can thicken it and offer it at other meals.

If she's not ready for solids, she wont open her mouth. maybe hold off for a week or 2 and try again. Babies should be showing signs of wanting solids, before just introducing it for the sake of it. At this stage, formula or breastmilk are the msot important part of their diets, the solids are as important at this stage
