What can I expect and do to ensure that my 3 year old son feels comfortable with going out in underpants? What can I do to help him?

I have a nearly four year old daughter, so I haven't ever potty trained a boy. When I took my daughter out shopping when she was in training I would take her to the bathroom as soon as we got to the store and have her try to go. then I would ask her every ten min. or so that way she knew mommy wanted to know and I could try to prevent an accident. She was 2 1/2 when she was potty trained and never was uncomfortable whereing undies. That might be different for boys. I guess all I can really say is keep with it once you've started, and make sure you give him losts of oppertunities to go once you are at a store. Good luck!

One carry sticky notes with you because you can cover the sensor on automatic toilets so it doesn't scare the child. Show him the restroom when you get to your destination, he will than likely become enthralled with the public bathroom you will more time there than anywhere else in the store. Offer to buy him something special if he has no accidents.

Hi Linda

I would just use a pull-up and run him to the washroom every half hour while shopping. If you don't have something on him and he has a accident he will be so embarrassed and that could set you back. With my first we just told him the pull-up is in case we don't make it to the washroom but we still have to go on the potty. Also take extra cloths if you decide to just take a chance with his big boy underwear on.

He might just surprised you and he might be just fine. I hope this helps.

Really I think it is harder for us to adjust to this new task, as it is for our kids. Thank you for your wisdom.

i put my daughter in plastic pants (over her underwear) incase there was an accident. Asked her if she was wet/ dry, needed to go potty about every 5 min. She had a very small bladder. You can introduce him to the public restroom when you first get there so that he feels comfortable.
