My daughter is almost 4 and she is a big time thumb sucker. I've tried so many things, but it all never works. It's both thumbs and she has one of them in her mouth at all time nearly. Any ideas from other mothers that have had this issue?

I use to be a thumb sucker as well. i use to even have a blanket. I sucked my thumb all the way till middle school. once i got there i stopped myself from doing it during the day and i would only do it at night. then i stopped totally. i do believe that it is something that you have to grow out of. my mother tried the no bite nail polish and hot sauce when i was younger and it did not work. now my 3 yr old sucks her middle 2 fingers on her left hand. (She also has a silky blanket that she carries around) She always does it when she is tired, watching tv, bored and going to sleep. she leaves sores and imprints on her fingers from sucking so hard. i try not to make a big deal of it b/c then it just upsets her. i just here and there say something to her about getting those fingers out of her mouth.

Jenny,
Look in the one step ahead catalog, and if you don't get it type that into the internet. My daughter is 3 and she still sucks her right thumb with her blankie, but only when she is tired or bored. So it isn't too bad, I am hoping it will stop on its own. I read that it doesn't affect their teeth until the permanent teeth come in and it also depends on if they are an aggressive sucker.

I know I've heard that she should out grow it, but I can't help but worry. I know a person that sucked there thumb and now that she is in her 30 she still has her little blanket she has to sleep with at night and she still sucks her thumb. I'm terrified that she will end up like that. Where do I get this brace thing at? Do I need to talk to a dentist and get it from them?

I have a 4 yr old that sucks her thumb and i am learning that most kids out grow it on their own, it is a comforting thing, like how some kids have blankets. There is a brace that you can buy that will help ease them from sucking their tumbs and it will also reposition the thumb so that our children don't have long term effects on the growth of their teeth.

Since shes doing it and not even realizing it then its probably just a comfort thing. Have you tried giving her a blanket or stuffed toy to replace her thumb?

i was a thumb sucker too, my school nurse placed some rubber (almost like durex) dont know what they called over my thumbs and bandaged them up, as my thumbs were shriveled, it worked in the end as i didnt like the fact of my thumbs bandaged up.

Well I hope she stops before the gets in school, but her thumb is in her mouth almost all the time and most of the time it's like she doesn't even realize it. If she is going to the bathroom and it's taking her a while, it's in her mouth. If she is bored or watching tv it's in her mouth. When she is sleeping, well you know. She is such a heavy sleeper, she doesn't realize that she is doing it. I'm just ready for her to stop. She is going to mess up her teeth and her thumbs have sores on them.

My daughter is 6 and still sucking her thumb! Very aggrivating. I have tried ignoring it, didn't work. I tried putting bad tasting things on it, didn't work. I'm at a loss myself!

I was a thumb sucker until I was 12. What got me to finally stop was my orthodontist had me tape my thumb to my index finger every night. Each morning I had to mark on a calendar if I made it through the night without sucking on my thumb. After a month I went back in and he gave me a gift for breaking the habit :)
