I am planning to go out for a night with my boyfriend and some friends my son is 5 and half months old and is breast feed. I am going to try to pump as much as i can but am thinking about giving him formula for the day or however long it takes to get the alcohol out of my system. Do you think that would be harmful or a bad idea for my baby?

I have given my baby ( now 7 months old ) formula off and on when going out or having a few drinks. It has never negatively effected my baby or my milk supply. I think a good rule is that if you're okay to drive you can breast feed. Moms deserve a little fun!

Hi Crystal,

Our little girl is 11wks and 1 day today and I have been mainly breast feeding but we also give her a bottle of formula before she goes to sleep as this helps to keep Emily asleep for longer during the night. The reason we started to give her some bottles was because she was putting on weight then she would loose it but now seeing she is bottle fed and breast feed she is putting on the correct amount of weight and, when we go out we know that she will be fine due to her having bottles. I agree that it is a good idea to have alternative idea's.

He has had formula before as we had to top him off when he was first born its not his favourite thing but he eats it up . I'm just more concerned if the formula will effect him in any way .

its smart to have an alternative plan if you are planning on drinking. pumping and/or gving him formula is a safer option. I *think* after drinking, you should pump several full bottles before returning to nursing; but I guess that would also be related to how much you drink - you could call your pediatrician to be more sure. though, realize that if he's never taken formula before, he may resist it, so try to pump first and have those bottles on hand.
