hi

i am pregnant and still breastfeeding my 11mo. my milk has dropped down to next to nothing and i am haveing to supplimen t his milk during the night. he cries all night looking for the milk i dont have.

can i go straight to cows milk? or should i start with something less harsh, like goats milk or rice milk?

i was planning to wean before the baby comes anyway, this is just a bit earlier than i was planning on weaning.

Like Renae said if you want to try to get your supply up you could try an SNS. That way you can supplement if needed and he can still breastfeed. If not, I would check with your ped. on what to give.

PS have you tried doing all the usual things to boost your supply? With some people their supply drops any time between 6 and 18 months and they are forced to wean with nothing they can do about it. But it is worth trying to boost it if you want to continue.

Most doctors and dieticians recommend that you give infant formula until at least 12mo (some dieticians even say 18 months). But he is not far off 12mo so it probably wouldn't too any harm. I wouldn't give it to him for the first time during the night, give it to him during the day for a few days to make sure it doesn't upset his stomach. I personally believe that infant formula is better because it contains extra nutrients and iron that babies need in a form that is easy for them to digest and absorb, but I know some people will disagree.
