I have custody of my grandson and there are times when he wakes up screaming. His body becomes stiff, head thrown back and his eyes are open but they seem to be blank. There is no particular time, it happens day and night. Sometime he may have only been to sleep 5 minutes and sometimes a half an hour or so. He has done this 4 times and he just turned 9 months on the 25th of Feb. I don't kn ow what to do. It lasts about 10 or 15 minutes and then he goes back into a sound sleep

The doctor can tell you more of course BUT

be sure to ask the doctor about "night terrors"
or
Epilepsy

my nephew had night terrors when he was around 2 i think, not too long maybe a few months? he's 5 now and just fine. and would do that same thing, he wouldn't really see my sister or her husband, just scream for a while, it really freaked out my sister i don't remember what they did, I'm pretty sure it was more of a grow out of it thing but you can also google night terrors I'm sure

and i have epilepsy and it started when i was a kid and they THOUGHT i had night terrors because i woke up and screamed and stiffened but i was actually seizing.

Hi,
My son exhibited this same behavior during and after times of stress (moving, divorce...) It was terrifying to see....I tried cuddling him, bathing him, talking to him.....nothing would snap him out of it. His lasted anywhere from 10 mins to 3 hrs. I talked to other moms, and his Dr.....and was told it is not uncommon, and usually subsides with age. Maybe check with your child's Dr just to be sure it isn't a seizure.....but otherwise, just be there for him to be sure he doesn't somehow injure himself. Good luck.
