my son is three years old and refuses to stop sucking his thumb. I have tried using all natural bitter yuck (its a chewing deteruant for dogs it tastes like rubber), hot sauce, and vineger. I have also tried to reward him and punish him. It has gotten to a point where his thumb nail is almost withered away. I am at my wits end with this issue if any one else is going threw this or has any pointers on how to break him of this habbit i would be thankfull to hear from you thanks for your time.

i didnt read all the other comments so i dont know if anyone has said this already but.... have u tried this stuff called no bite? its a really nasty tasteing nail polish u can find it in beauty salon stores its clear so u dont have to worry about it looking like ur son is wearing nail polish lol also i would be very worried about his teeth im a dental assistant and in school for hygiene and that can deform his top palet and make his teeth stick out. have u taken him to a dentist? he should have his first dental visit now if hes 3. the dentist can prob give u advise and if worse comes to worse there is an appliance that can be placed in his mouth but its uncomfortable. go speak with a childrens dentist that the best advise i can give good luck:)

Thumb sucking is a huge issue in our house... I will say I am 23 and still suck my thumb. With that said, I only do it at night in bed for a short amount of time before I fall asleep and if I am sick. The only ppl that have seen me doing it in years has been my close family.
So my 4 year old sucks her thumb and it drives my husband crazy! He is just worried about germs and if she will teach our new baby to suck his thumb. So far the baby doesn't.
Our method is, she can only have her thumb in her bed. If she tries to suck her thumb during the day at the house she has to go lay down. (she hates taking naps) If she does it in public, it can only be done in the car. If she is caught doing it outside like in a store. We thump her hand and remind her that she can't do that unless she wants to go to bed. So far it has worked for us.

Good luck, it is really really hard thing to break. It will happen with time. For us it is usually a good way to know if she is sleepy or not feeling well.

My son is almost four and it bothers me because I sucked my thumb and it messed up my teeth and contributed to me needed and having braces for years. My sons teeth are already showing signs of the thumb sucking and I like you have tried everything. I have found something that works..sort of...I have some clear water proof medical tape and I wrap it once around his thumb and figure 8 it around his wrist. It more of just reminds him not to and it has been sucessful even at night.

I'm afraid I don't have any pointers for you, but can definitely relate. My daughter is 4 1/2 and still sucks her thumb. I have spoken to health visitors etc and they all say 'don't worry she will grow out of it in time' but it does stress me. Having said that, in the last 6 months it has got a lot better and now she only really sucks her thumb when she is really tired or in bed at night, so maybe they are right... My son is just over 2 now and also sucks his thumb lots - possibly more than his sister did, so I suspect I have many more years of this to come. Good luck!
