Tips on how to encourage a longer night's sleep for 1 year old?

Hello All!!

My 1 year old baby girl seems to only sleep 10 hours at night ...

She wakes at 6.30 or 7 am

First nap at 10 am for approx 1.5 hours

Second nap at 3 or 3.30 pm for approx 1.5 hours

(I always wake her by 4.30pm so i can get her to bed on time)

Bed at 8.30 pm

I am wondering - shall i reduce her day sleeping - would that encourage her to sleep a little longer at night?

She used to go to bed at 7pm - but the 5 am morning were horrible - so i pushed her naps / bedtime back slowly - and now she sleeps at 8.30pm and so i get a 6.30/7 start ...

Any tips on how i could encourage more sleep at night?

I agree with Toni...sounds like your 12 mo. Baby has a perfect sleep schedule! Count your blessings!

13 hours sleep is fairly average for a 1 yo. I wouldn't try taking away a daytime nap if she still needs it, it won't be long before she naturally cuts one out herself anyway. Also toddlers sleep better at night if they are able to have the naps they need in the day, if they don't they often get over stimulated/ over tired and find it harder to get to sleep when they finally get to sleep.

6.30/ 7am is a decent time to wake up, I know many mums whose children wake up at 5/ 5.30am every morning without fail (regardless of the time they go to bed). If you are finding the 'early' wake ups hard would it be possible for you to go to bed earlier? So you can get the sleep you obviously need, rather than messing with your daughters schedule because she sounds as though she's doing great.

Just keep in mind when reading these "should be" charts and suggestions they are just generalizations. All children are different. These just suggest the average.

My son slept about 10 hours a night and was down to one nap by a year old. He's an early riser.

My daughter slept 12 hours a night and took two naps until around 18 months. She likes to sleep in.

So just follow your baby's cues more than the baby books. ;)

If she's happy and alert during her awake time, that's all that matters.
