Since my son was born, he has insisted on being rocked to sleep. Even as an infant, he needed that closeness. Sometimes he's down in 5 minutes, sometimes longer, but he has never been able to go to sleep on his own. I haven't minded this, but he's now 29 months old, and I'm noticing that because he's getting so tall, he's less comfortable going to sleep in my arms, and I want to transition him to being able to lay down in his bed and fall asleep naturally. At the moment he's still in his crib, but we'll soon be transitioning him to having his mattress on the floor. I practice attachment parenting, so please don't even suggest letting him cry until he falls asleep! That's not acceptable to me. But if you have any other suggestions, I'm all ears!

I had this same problem with my son, he had to fall asleep in my arms. I wouldnt say to leave him to cry himself to sleep. I put my son in his bed with his comfort blanket, calmed him down and stayed with him until he was drowsy and then left the room. A majority of the time this worked for about an hour or so and then he would wake up. so i started to calm him down, put him to bed and leave the room, i would wait 5 minutes (even if he was crying) then go back in and reassure him i was still her. again i would calm him down and do the same things. after a couple of days of waiting for 5 mins i then went to 10 mins and so on. Its a lot of hard work especially when they are crying and calling for you, but if you stick to it it will work in the end. Sorry for the long explanation. Hope this can help you.

My husband or I lay by my little girl until she falls asleep---with my husband he usually falls asleep first. So you could try laying by him for a while, then transition to laying next to his mattress on the floor, then a little further away etc.
