I've been having a bit of trouble with my 6 week old. For the past 2 weeks he has been extremly fussy at night before bed. At around 8-9pm he starts fussing and is absolutely inconsolable unless i feed him more formula. I've been getting conflicting comments about this from my pediatrician and other mothers. I was told that if i give him some water (boiled of course) with the smallest amount of sugar to sweeten it, that he would start to be ok between feedings.

It's getting to the point where i just want to rip out my hair because he just refuses to stop crying until about 11-11:30pm, but after that he is fine for the night.

Does anybody have any suggestions? I would really appreciate anything you can throw at me.

i gave my daughter small amounts of water between feeds from 4 weeks and had no problems with it. i dont see how giving a baby water in between feeds can do any harm.

I agree with Naomi, it could be colic or wind. I found with my little boy he would scream for a bottle but would'nt drink much. If this happened then I would know he had wind. (sometimes early on its hard to tell, if its wind or hunger) The reason for this is babies can't tell the difference between hunger pain and wind pain, therefore they think they are hungry. My bubba never had colic but did get a lot of wind. I used infants friend. Its a great product and helped me (I'm in Australia). i also used all the techniques to get rid of wind too. If you little man is drinking the bottle with no problems then he just might be hungry. I was told that babies don't need water until they start to eat food. All babies need is mums breastmilk or formula at such a young age. My little boy was always in upper percentile too and sometimes needed more formula than what it said on the tin. I used to base the amount of formula I would give him on his weight. Not to mention when they have growth sprut they want more food. I wish you all the best.

When you say fussy do you mean he is just whimpering or is he screaming? If he is screaming it is possible he may have a slight case of colic. My 8 week old is the same and has been diagnoded as such. I have been trying Infacol before feeding this week and this seems to work 90% of the time. Hope this helps :)
