We just got back from the doctor and I found out his iron was low. Any advise?

He doesn't seem to have any symptoms and I was quite suprised when she said it was low. I thought I fed him a balanced diet mixed with iron fortified formuls.and cereal. She prescribed iron drops and said to come back in a month.

Calcium can help with iron absorption. It's weird but they can go together. Spinach and other leafy greens help, and not just with iron if you know what I mean ^_^

the drops are great and will help get his iron up where it needs to be but Kim is right, constipation is very common with them. make sure he gets plenty of liquids and if he's old enough for water, push that pretty well until you see how his body reacts to the extra iron.

and just to ease your mind until his levels come up, unless his iron is dangerously low it's nothing to get worked up over. i am 23 and still have low iron. it just makes me a little bit more sleepy than most people but is by no means debilitating =)

Well my doctor recently told me that my oldest son's iron was also low. So I freaked out, and had to come back in two weeks to have it checked again. The whole time I was waiting I couldn't help but wonder why?? But then we went back and lo and behold, it was just the machine! I could have saved myself a lot of worrying all along. So I would suggest making sure that your doctor is sure!

I had to do iron drops for my son...watch out he got really constipated. He didn't show any signs either of symptons. After 2 weeks we quit the drops according to the doctor and within 2 months, he was just fine. I wouldn't panic....keep up with green veggies!!

Get some more fiber enriched foods also....pears, peaches....and like your doing iron fortified cereals
