Weight in toddlers and perschoolers

[deleted account] ( 11 moms have responded )

I took my boys to the doctor last week. my 4 year old was a little on the heavy side at 38lb's and my 18mo old was on the light side at 22lb's. these seam like age appropriate wights to me. I'm thinking it might be time for a new Dr. please share your thoughts

I don't know if it is time for a new Doctor. Depends on why you feel that way. Was he rude or did he just say something you did not like? If your kids are eating a healthy diet with lots of fruits, veggies and lean meat and fish then you should be fine. If they are eating a junk food diet with lots of fried food and bad fats then your Doctor should be making suggestions and questioning you. Since we have only the info you have given, there really is no way for your post to be answered.

My 3 year old girl weighs in at 31 pounds. She is also quite tall.

I think your kids are very normal to me. You do have to remember that doctors look at some sort of average charts, which don't really make allot sense to me and you also have to look at yourself and your spouse your families, how tall you are and so on. My boy is 2.5 years old and everybody thinks he is a 4 year old one since he is tall for his age ... yeah, since we are shortest from our families and we are already considered tall. I am 5ft 8' and my hubby is 6 ft 2', so yeah he will be tall too. At 2.5 years he weights about 16 kg - 35 lb ... please, don't always listen to doctos, they look at average charts, just look at how healthy your child is. This matters the most!!!

Wow!! I'm feeling a little out of sorts here but here goes my experience. I am a small woman 5' even 135 lbs. My husband is 5'11 and a big guy. My daughter was 42 lbs at her 3 yr check up she is now 3 1/2 and weighs 48 lbs. My Dr. never said she is heavy however he did suggest that I put her on a "heart healthy diet". I was flabbergasted! My daughter has been a big kid since she was born, she is not fat, no rolls or flaps, she is just very sturdy like her father. When my Dr. suggested a heart healthy diet I started paying more attention to what she eats and found that she has a wonderful balance in her diet. You need to only be happy that ur child is getting enough excercise and is eating right and is healthy. Weight and height are determined by genetics not by some chart ur dr. reads off of. So good luck and don't worry. Oh BTW I have a 22 mth old son also who is small for his age, 24 lbs at his 18mth check up.

My daughter is 3 1/2 years old and weighs 50 lbs but she is super tall. My son is just about 13 months and 26 lbs, my doctor just says that they have always been on their own little chart and as long as they dont take a big dip below or above where they've been they are fine! Everyone is made different you can't just think one think is normal, If I were you I would find a doctor that understands that!

My 3 yr old is 38 lbs and my 5 yr old is 50 lbs, and my family doctor has never made one single comment about their weight.

It also depends on their hieght. My 2 year old is 31 lbs but it's not fat. The fat they do have at their age is brown fat and its good for them. All drs want your kids to be in a certain percentile. They dont look at genetics or any common sence knowledge.

My youngest daughter is 3 but the size of a 4 year old. She is 30lbs and Finally on the charts!! I know most child seats say 4 years of age and 40lbs, so its normal for a 4 yr old to weigh 40 lbs. And as far as yourn 18 month old 22 lbs is better than my 2 girls. One was 19 months before she hit 20lbs and my youngest was 22 months. But again most child seats say 1 year and 20lbs so that is the average. If your Dr gave you a hard time about those weights then maybe you should look for another Dr. Those weights seem fine to me.

How do they rate on the "average" growth chart? How does your family rate as far as "average size"? My daughter -3- is only 27 lbs -small. But my 20mon old is 23 lbs -not large but more average. I don't know what age appropriate means b/c some kids are chunky when they are little and grow up to be really thin. Its more about a good diet and exersize. I wouldn't worry about weight problems until they are in elementary school if its a problem then. Still lots of kids grow into their bodies. I was huge when I was a baby and now I'm thin so don't worry!

my 17mnth old is 26lb but he is on the higher end of the centile thing on graph. i know a 26mnth old who is 27lb, so it all depends. all kids are different, as long they eat and drink healthy, i wouldnt worry. we cant be all the same weight, height etc

Those are completely age appropraite weights! My four year old is 36 pounds and you can count his ribs! I wish he would put on a couple pounds. As for being 22 lbs at age 18 mos, both of my sons were about that weight at that age and my Dr was always happy with their size.
