I have no clue what to do with my son during the day. He loves beeing read to, but when I try to teach shapes from the four we have (shape sorter) he doesnt care, and moves on to a different toy.

My kids are teens/preteens now, but when they were one, I read to them A TON!!! The shape sorter mostly teaches spatial relations as opposed to shapes. We had a little wooden puzzle for shapes...the blue square, the red triangle, the purple circle, the green diamond, etc. The puzzle pieces are big, about the size of your palm, and they could fit the shape into the appropriate place in the puzzle. We played patta-cake, sang songs, made pretend drums out of plastic tubs and plastic spoons. We collected leaves, went to the park, and at lunch I usually let them finger paint with yogurt on their high chair tray. They had books that taught them words, sounds, textures, etc. We had ride-on toys and the Fisher-Price garage and farm...lots of good times with those! (Imaginative play.) Just about anything that seems simple is the funnest for them at that age.

hi, when im trying to teach my daughter new things, we do it thru play, like colouring for colours, when were out i tell her wot things are and she will ask lots of questions, we do counting when were walking up/downs stairs. children learn alot thru playing,

my daughter loves messy activites, sand/water/playdough/sticking/cooking,
reading is a very good way of learning, u can buy a shape book if you really want to teach shapes as you say he likes books.

good luck.

just interact with him as he's playing dont push him to play or learn a certain thing, let him show you what he wants to be doing. you could take him to the park to play or to feed ducks or just go for a walk.

have you tried a mums and tots group, my son and i have been goinng to one since he was 3 months old, hes two now and still loves it, he gets time to play with different toys and other children for a change, and it gives me a chance to meet new mums.

hope this helps x
