What can I do to get my 9 month old to hold his own bottle or sippy cup?

I have tried 2 different sippy cups with handles and 2 different bottles in addition to his feeding bottles. I know all babies have their own pace, I just feel like he should have it down by now. He used to help and attempt to hold it (here and there) when he was like 5-7 months, but nothing since!

At 9 months, put his hands on it and then take yours off. Taking away the bottle agiving just cups with handles will help with this. Mine really took to the Avent sippies with the green (teether) spout. They never took bottles though.

If you and everyone else stops doing it for him, he will have incentive to do it himself.

I would say dont give up. My daughter went through the same thing, she just refused to hold her own bottles and we always kept trying to encourage her, but nothing. Im not sure what triggered it, but we started noticing she wasnt throwing as many fits when she went to bed and realized just out of nowhere, she started holding it. She actually didnt start till this past march when she was just over 15 months old (she was a 3 month early preemie so when she does things we always see her as 3 months younger). Then when we got her to drinking the sippy cups we got the ones that are kind of an hour glass shape & are really small in the middle with grips. She does really well with those. So dont give up, he will get it. He might even just learn it over night like our daughter seemed to do. He might just shock you one morning. Good Luck.

See, I've tried that though with the grips and the handles. I will give him a sip of it so he knows what it is and then set it on his highchair tray and he will pick it up and just throws it. but even when i try to feed him a bottle, he won't hold it.

I went through this with my son on several things. my son is now 1 and refuses a sippy cup. but he does know how to hold one. the trick that i learned was to get one that is like a bottle. walmart had one that had grips on the sides. it didn't have handles, it was like a bottle. but that was how i got him use to a cup.
