What do you think about a five year old having a bedroom in the basement?

My seven year old and five year old share a small bedroom on our main floor. However it has become very crowded. My five year old has decided that he would like to move to the bedroom downstairs so that he can have his own space. We have let him sleep down there several times. However I am not sure if he is too young to move downstairs. I am trying to talk my seven year old to move down also in the other bedroom but not sure if he will. What do you think about a five year old having a bedroom in the basement?

Thank you so much for your advice. I feel alot better about it now. His birthday is in April so we are going to let him pick out his paint colors and a new theme for his new bedroom. He is so excited! I already put night lights down there also. I put them all over the bedroom with a path to the bathroom and stairs. My main concern was a fire. But we have huge windows and I will go over a fire plan with him. Hopefully everything will be ok. Thanks!

my 3 year old's room is in the basement, and it works fine. just get a baby monitor so you can hear him, if its far away from your room. i love having him down there, and he loves the freedom. but definately get night lights up the wazoo! basements are noisy and its just best to keep it bright. good luck

I dont know as a mom, but when I was 5 and my sister was 7, I asked to go downstairs. My parents let me pick the color and I loved it. but get the night lights on the path down, kids imaginations can run away with them.

It will all work out it is easier for them to make the decision than to be forced. And if you pressure the 7 year old too much and the 5 year old see his resistance he might change his mind. I would go for it!

Ah yes, i went through the same thing with my boys. My husband and I decided it would be best to let the older one sleep downstairs, to help with his independence. Safety is alwasy number one, so if the basement is secure then i don't see a problem with him sleeping downstairs, especially since he asked to do it.
