I use mucinex cough for my 2 1/2 yr old son. I usually use it just for nap and bedtime when he is sick to help him sleep so he is not up all night coughing. He usually has some nasal congestion at the same time. I run a cool mist humidifier in his room at night too.

I use Little Tykes Decongestant/ Cough. You can get it at Toys R Us or Babies R Us. I have used it on all my kids, ages 11 months to 5 years old. I would not recommend using Vicks on infants/ toddlers. Vicks induces the kids to produce more mucus, thus making it harder to breathe rather than easier. I use a vaporizer with my kids, and it has been recommended to me to try the saline and suction with my kids. I am not a big believer in saline in the nasal passages and maybe the lungs. It is not supposed to be there....

I agree with Susan. I also use a Vicks Warm Steam Vaporizer. You can also put Vicks Vaporub on the bottom of the feet. If there is a way to incline her while she's sleeping that tends to help as well. Not easy to do as kids move around so much while sleeping. Do not use any cough medicine, however.

the vicks vapo rub works well as long as you use it as directed - meaning, do NOT put it in the nostrils, or around the nose, mouth, etc. using it on the chest and back (and feet if you feel so inclined to do so) is fine. i also use a vaporizer/humidifier. if the cold is really bad and truly hindering sleep - talk to your pedi about using benadryl at night. i have found that honey - a tablespoon or so - works well also. it's completely safe, non-medicated and can be used often if needed. i normally end up giving my son a spoonful twice a night when he has a cold. (i don't use 'raw' honey so i'm not sure about the amounts i guess) my son is only 25 lbs at 2 1/2 years old.

good luck! it's never fun when they're sick!

Hi Megan -

I use a homeopathic remedy called Chestal - works to quiet the coughing. Also just a 1/2 teasp of raw honey works to coat the throat if its a cough cause by a "tickle" in the throat. I have a book called Natural Medicine For Children that I highly recommend. It has natural remedies and also more mainstream remedies. A whole chapt is devoted to coughs, different types of coughs and their remedies. What type of cough does she have? I'll look it up for you and give you the recommendations if you'd like.

I also use a Vicks steam vaporizer - the warm steam settles coughs pretty well.

I hope these suggestions are helpful. I've also used Vicks Vaporub effectively but I'm learning that there are some fears about the ingredients - I'm doing my homework on that one but thought I would suggest it anyway.
