Sometimes I just set the timer for say 5 minutes and let them know that what ever is still left on the floor when the timer goes off gets put away for a few days. The thing is you have to follow through when the timer goes or it doesn't work. It is fun, like a game. I adjust the time if the mess isn't that bad.

Try the Kevin Leeman way. Tell them to clean their rooms. Dont yell, scream, or any of those things. If they dont clean the rooms, let their be a consequece. Later your child will want to be driven to soccer practice, ballet, movies, or some privledge he takes for granted. Simply say, "I can't do that, because you didn't do what I asked."

1. Constantly praise them when their room is clean, they will get so used to the compliments when you sound disappointed it kinda guilts them in to making you happy, so they can get the praise again. If that fails....
2. Connect the cleaning to an allowance and if you have to clean they have to pay you. (If they dont get an allowence connect it to a toy or activity that they really want to do)

i agree. make it fun! i would not reward with sweets or anythin like that because they must learn that some things they MUST do! but do a mary poppins on it....just a spoonfull of sugar makes the medicine go down!!

Find something that your kids really like to do, i.e. video games, a trip to the park and then set a timer for an hour. Tell the kids that that can do that fun activity until the timer goes off AFTER their rooms are clean. The first few times it might take them most of the hour to get it done but once they get the idea they'll be able to do it really fast.

I turn it into a competition wherein both my eldest two have to be the first to get all the toys away, there never is a winner, who can tell who put the most things away, but it definately gets done quickly, lol
