Okay so my son is cutting his 4th molar, and the other it looked like he scratched it, it bleed a little and i could see the tip of the tooth. this morning it looked like there was a flap of skin sticking out of where the tooth was coming through, i didn't think anything of it, since he had scratched his tooth. tonight after he came from from some time with grandma, the flap of skin(or so i though) was bubbled and stiff, and was a brown color. it was darker near the bottom and had a little white line through it. I got my husband to entertain him while i prodded at it, and i pulled it out, it felt like pulling out a black head. i ran my finger from the bottom of his gum over it to pull it out. and im pretty sure he swallowed it, because after it was off it was gone. and the gum and tooth underneath it look normal, a little red, but normal. has anyone else encountered this?

I used to work in a pediatric dental office for a few years before I became a stay at home mom....Its sounds to me like some food got stuck under his gums and caused an irritation....it might also have been from him scratching it, if blood got stuck under his gums that would explain the brown coloring and the white line probably his gums healing from the scratch...when your gums heal they do form a "scab" but because your mouth is always wet they are white....its unlikely that he had an abcess because its a new tooth but anything is possible, its hard to say what it is because im not a dentist and I cant see what it looked like....I would take him to a pediatric dentist, if you go to your pediatrician its likely they wont be able to give you answers....plus it never hurts to get established with a dentist if you haven't already :))))

Thanks Barbara! I didnt think it was anything horrific, considering how easily it came out, and that everything looked normal underneath. We are planning on bringing him to see the dentist in march, when hubby's benefits kick in, so he can get used to sitting in the chair and the dentist himself. I've been keeping a close eye on it though, and it's still a little swollen, but he does have a molar pushing through, and everything still looks fine. My mom goes to the same church as the dentist does and i asked her to ask him about it, but she keep forgetting lol.

It could have been an abscessed tooth and I would not have recommended pulling it out. You should have taken him to his pediatrician.
