start making it into a routine. Have him choose a book out and read it together. Play reading games with them. Some games you can play he really won't know that it is reading. You can also ready some comics.

I have always taken my daughter to the publc library (were you have to be quiet) and let her read two or three books. She may be only three, but she gets that thats reading not play time. You could also read to your child a little a day. No matter what the age! That at least gives them knowledge. Keep a certain time of day that only reading is allowed.

It depends on how old your son is. Showing that you enjoy reading, by reading a book, magazine or newpaper, is a good start. Sitting down to read stories together is also good. Find some stories that he enjoys -- would he like silly, nonsense stories? Maybe something about a hero? Hard to get very specific when I don't know how old he is. Is he old enough to say what he does and doesn't like in a story? Maybe he wants to read non-fiction books; my nephew couldn't care less about a novel, but he'll read Science books no problem. Check with his friends' moms, see what their kids like (assuming the kids are a similar age).
