Try a photo or photo album with pics of his family that he can hang on to and look at anytime he feels sad and misses you. Talking to him about being a big boy! And use Big Boy rewards like doing and activity with you or his Dad. Also making the association that Dad is a big boy and what he needs to do to be like Dad and act like a big boy too! That's what works for my son. We use rewards like going fishing with Dad on the weekends or playing baseball in yard before dinner something fun but big boyish. Hope that helps!
