We were raised old school - eat what's on your plate or be hungry. It worked for us, too. Now I do it with my children, and it's working for them. Kids won't let themselves starve, and if they realize they aren't getting you to make them a different meal, they'll hush the complaining and eat. Of course you will get a tantrum in the beginning, but it will stop when they see you won't bend about it. My four year old would throw his fits during meals and refuse to eat, so I would let him up from the table and not give him the option of eating something else. Now, the boy is eating up everything he used to refuse to eat, and then some!

That has to be so frustrating I feel for you! My boys every now and then will try to pull that on me. I guess the best way to describe myself is Im mean. I have explained to my kids that when I make dinner, this is not a resturant, I don't make more than one meal for dinner. Every so often that is not true and I will prepare something for the kids if I know that they hate what my husband and I are having. My 6yr old though is a purist when it comes to his food. He eats the same food that we are just tweeked. Ive found that when my complainer voices what he dislikes about a food its usually easy enough to avoid adding whatever the offensive item is. Now he still has to eat salad and meat but for example if you leave off the dressing he will tolerate salad and eat it all gone. Weird I know. Sometimes getting your picky eater to help make dinner will keep them intrested in eating it if they have helped make it. Nothing better than pride in something they did to motivate a kid :)
Best of luck to you and your dinner plans :)
