I live a fourth of a mile from the elementary school. My children will be 5 in 2 months and 6 in a week. What is a good age to let them walk to and from school by themselves?

I would wait, my oldest son is 12 and my oldest daughter is 9 and I still drive them to school every morning. Maybe when he turns 13 I will let him go to school on his own.

I'm so afraid of this. My son wants to walk or ride his skate board to schl with his friends, but I don't know how to let go. He will be 12 in 2 months. He is the baby of the family for now.

I think it depends on several different things. Are there many roads to cross on the route? Will they be with friends? What kind of neighbourhood is it? Are they responsible/mature for their age?

I would still say, personally, that 5 and 6 is a little too young, even if you can comfortably answer all the above questions. I started walking to school with my friends when I was 8, and I think that was about right.

I wouldn't be comfortable with my kids 7 and 8 to walk alone, i guess its a matter of when you feel comfortable with it, I honestly don't think there is a right or wrong answer,i know some kindergarten kids who walked pretty far last year

5 and 6 is too young IMO. I know it's not that long but they are still little.
I would wait.

My son is going to walk/ride his bike to school this year and he is 9. The only reason I am allowing it is I finally feel like he is old enough and two other kids in our neighborhood will be with him.
