When should I call the doctor or ER for my son with croup?

My son was diagnosed with croup on Friday and he has just seemed to get worse! His eyes are swollen and matted, he is way more tired and fussy than usual (he is a very happy baby and now rarely smiles), his cough is horrendous, and nothing seems to be helping. He already got the steroid shot from the doctor and we have been running the humidifier and just started taking him out into the cool night air this evening. When should I take him to the emergency room? I don't want to go and then get sent home because I am overreacting.

Since croup is a viral infection, there isn't any medication that they can give your son that will help, other than the steroids to help decrease the inflammation in his larynx. I could be wrong, (or maybe it was just a coincidence) but my son seemed to get worse also when I ran the humidifier at night. Maybe try turning it off and see how he does. If he is having a lot of difficulty breathing, though, I would take him to the ER. Because that's just plain scary. Good luck, and I hope your son feels better soon!
