I have always heard to wait until 6 months to begin baby food, but certainly don't cut out breast milk/formula. The reason for the wait is that I have heard from doctors and my cousins (who are pediatric nurses) is that they tend to have fewer allergies the longer you wait to introduce "food" as opposed to formula or breast milk. And a word of advice - don't be discouraged if your baby doesn't fall in love with the new food immediately. I've heard that you should try two to three seperate times to introduce the new food. Don't be discouraged if they take a bite and immediately make a face and spit it back out. You should introduce veggies first (baby food veggies or pureed veggies) because it sets them up for a lifetime of enjoying veggies. If you f start them out on fruits, they tend to only like sweeter foods. I don't know about just straight cereal, we mixed a little cereal with baby food when he was younger. I breast fed because that was what worked for us, but you have to find the the things that work for you and your baby. They are all different and all have their own personalities after all. Hope that helps and just enjoy your baby while he/she is still a little one. Mine is three years old and while I will always consider him my baby he is growing so quickly. While I cherish the days we have now, I do get nostalgic and sometimes miss him being so tiny and dependent on me. Then I remember that our goal as parents is to help them grow up to be responsible and independent. If we can do that, then we are a success as parents.

Enjoy your baby, even the difficult things because it is gone all too soon. Hope this helps a little. Don't be discouraged. Always remember that you can always pray and God will never leave you. Best wishes!

I waited till the sign that my daughter was ready....when we were eating she tried to grab at food and she actually looked hungry.. and the chart at the dr's office said if they drink 36 oz or more a day of formula... i breastfeed so i can't go by that... oh, and also if you try to feed her and she doesn't really get to push the food back and swallow it...wait a week and try again...

Your baby will let you know when he/she is ready for the food. You can start with rice cereal at 4 months but if the baby spits out the food and/or does not move it around and swallow it the first 3 or times you try then he/she is probably not ready - try again the next week. I agree with Jeanette on the veggies... after the baby has been on cereal for a few weeks and you know there are not going to be any reactios introduce 1 veggie to start their diet off right.

If you are talking about starting her on table food/baby food, 4 months is o.k. to start cereal. Only introduce 1 new vege/fruit at a time to see how she will react to them. I usually started w/ peaches or apricots. As for regular milk, hold off until she is a year old. She needs the formula, it has all the nutrients her body need. When you make her cereal, use the formula to make it.
