Is your son able to go through a nap and still be dry? When that happens is usually a good time to start it. For now, you can take him to pick out his potty and absolutely let him into the bathroom with you when you or his dad go. The reason I brought up the nap business is because, if you have him sit on the potty as soon as he wakes up he is more likely to use it successfully. When he does, cheer him on. You will also want to figure out some sort of reward system for him beyond "Yay, you used your potty!" Stickers and a calendar worked for mine, he sees how many times he used it each day. Now, he gets a sticker for each day we go without an accident and he is trying harder. Pull Ups are really great while they master the poop portion of this, but to expedite the pee part. Go with the washable kind, just wait until the poop part is done. Unless you've done cloth diapers, in which case do as you like. They just don't do as well even with the sensation/cool strip. Ask him if he needs to go anytime you or his dad does. Ask him about a half hour after eating or drinking something. Get some potty books and be prepared to read a lot.

Also, even if you do manage to get him to use his potty before the baby comes, expect there to be some regression when the baby arrives.

With all of it, be patient with him and yourselves. If he isn't ready or doesn't want to, wait a little bit and try again later. You do not want to turn this into a battle. He will win. Good luck.

i have a soon to be 17 month old girl! and i just started pushing the potty last week. she been using the potty for 3 days now and only wearing diapers at night and nap. i hear boys are harder to potty train than girls but all i do is leave a diaper off her during the day adn watch her closley to see what shes doin and take her in teh potty ever half hour and let her sit for a few minutes.

He is ready, when he is ready. Make sure daddy is showing him how he goes to the bathroom. From a mom with 3 boys- don't force it. If they nap dry, it is a good time to start talking about it too.

My twins are 20 mths old and still in diapers. I have been reading up on magazines about potty training and alot of the articles say it's best to take your child with you to the bathroom each time you go. You can place a baby potty for your son in your bathroom and have him sit on it while you sit on yours. I have done so with my daughter and she is catching on to the concept. The articles also have said that you can start potty training at around 13 months of age. Hope this helps. Blessings.
