My sister has been trying to teach my 5 month old nephew sign language and he can sign "Milk" which is very helpful because sometimes he starts crying then she is trying to figure out whats going on and he will sign "Milk" and then she will nurse him where as when he doesnt sign milk and she goes to nurse him he doesnt want it and it was something else, so now she asks "whats a matter" and he signs back "milk" its so cute and helpful, My other sister 10 yrs older than me taught me sign language when i was a baby through to age 4 and it cut back on tantrums for me and she said she believes its because i could communicate what i wanted/needed where as a child can become frustrated by not being able to let you know due to speech not getting through. this is just my opinion i hope this is what you were asking

I am signing with my 15mo old daughter and it is great. She was getting so frustrated that I couldn't understand her that she would just scream when she wanted or needed something, and it was up to me to keep guessing what she wanted in order for her to stop. Once I introduced a few signs, the screaming stopped! It's been great! We most commonly use more, all done, please, thank you, eat, drink/milk, potty, and baby. We've started going to a free baby signs class at our local community center, so I'm hoping to be able to broaden our signing vocabulary! I know some people think that if you sign with your kids it doesn't encourage them to speak, but I've actually been reading that it helps with speech development!

I use some signs with my 9 month old son and it has helped me know what he needs. He doesn't do them yet, but will either smile or grab my hands when I do the one he needs. I haven't use the ASL ones but my husband and I made up our own. I think it is a good idea and really helps you accomplish things during the day.

I took sign language for three years in college. It was the best thing that I ever did. My son was born partially deaf and had the hardest time communicating. Since I know most of the language, we (the whole family) were able to use it. He then went into daycare, where it is an everyday practice for the staff. they claim that it makes communicating easier with the younger children. Now he is in kindergarten, and has had the surgeries needed to help him hear better. Imagine my surprise when his teacher wrote to the families that she will be using sign language in her class work. My son already has the basics down, and is loving all the new stuff. I feel that sign language is very helpful, and to make a short story so very long, i am glad that it has become so widely used. it was a blessing in disguise for me, and i am sure it is a blessing for many other families, regardless of disabilities.
