hi,

i have a 1 year old daughter who doesnt talk much and when she does its only mom, dad, baba, and no...i try to teach her things and play with her but she shoves u away. when u call her name she ignores u. im a stay at home mom so we are always together. i know shes not deaf but im afraid she might be delaying a little bit...she sees her cousins all the time and other family but she still doesnt interact with them when they try...do you think my daughter is delayed? i was when i was younger...and dont want her growing up with learning problems. any advice?

I would say she sounds just fine. Has she just turned one, or is she closer to two? Either way it doesn't matter much- its so hard not to compare your child to other children but its the worst thing you can do sometimes, because you will only find things to worry about! Bottom line is, children all develop at different rates and as long as she IS developing, making progress and learning milestones, it doesn't matter when she learns things. It sounds like she could just be going through a phase where she wants to learn and do things independently, and there is a very wide range for when children learn to speak. I think speaking in full sentences before two is uncommon anyway. My advice would be to not worry about it and just keep doing your best!

Ya, I wouldn't worry too much about it and try not to compare her to siblings or nieces and nephews......remember that all children develop differently! My daughter didn't walk until almost 14 months but she's been talking since before she was a year and putting together short sentences at 18 months......it's just sooo hard to tell and comparing children can cause unecessary stress!

You've notice there may be a problem and as a mom you've done ur job! Good luck mommy......I'm sure she'll be just fine!

I have a friend whose daughter is about to turn one to. She is the most anti-social little one I've ever met. My niece is the same way. She wouldnt let anyone hold her or even get near her when she was 13 months. She just grew out of it. Hopefully your daughter is going through the same thing. Ive noticed little girls are more anti social than little boys are. Dont worry I dont think she is delayed.

See ur doctor about it ASAP and if they can't offer you a solution they should hopefully be able to refer you to a speech therapist!?
