Looking for thrifty travel ideas!

Ok, so I consider myself pretty darn thrifty, and my husband is amazed at how I find the things I do. For instance, I love to read and get books from local thrift shops and more, well, I have been wanting a Kindle for a long time but WILL not spend the money on one. Just the other night I was on Amazon.com just shopping around when some ebooks caught my eye for $.99. I thought HMMMMM some of these are ones that I have been looking for and just wont spend the money on. So while browsing through, I found a FREE Kindle download for my laptop so i don't even need the kindle. I bought a couple of the books for under a dollar each and downloaded the kindle app to my laptop. Now I have my summer reading stocked up and under way!
With that, I am having a bit of a problem coming up with a thrifty way to do a fun family vacation. We decided last year that we would make it our goal to see all 50 states in our lifetime and share the tradition with our boys now 6 and 5. We figured if we start now we may accomplish this but if not it is something fun to pass down to the boys and thier families one day. So I put all 50 states on slips of paper and we put them in a container. Thanksgiving is when we pick our destination for the next year. My oldest got to pick first and he picked New York! We are from Pennsylvania and have not really traveled much outside except for the tristate area of PA WV MD. First I would love any and all ideas for fun budget friendly things to do in New York as well as all over the country. I would love to hear about the areas you all live in and what things are around (including the local thrift shops and more)
I look forward to hearing from all of you and getting to know you all so I can share our budgeting and thrifty ideas as well!

Thank you so much

Hi! One thing I can think of is, when you book your hotel it is a good idea to call the hotel directly and see if they can offer you a discount! It never hurts to ask and you might end up getting a really good deal. I live in WI and have lived in IL as well...there are plenty of thrift stores in the area I live. Kenosha has some museums that are cheap or free to visit, and a nice beach area. IL Beach Resort is another choice for a beach, that's nearby. Gurnee IL has a huge mall and Pleasant Prarie has an outlet mall (even if you don't buy anything they're fun for window shopping and maybe grabbing a bite to eat!).
