Locking vs. Deleting a thread

Hi Ladies.
As a new moderator, I am confused about why some threads are locked while others are removed. Case in point, that newest one about the twin boys that smear their feces on the wall at nap time. I read through that, and it seems to me that the thread (some posts at least) should be deleted. Can someone explain this to me?
Thanks!
Amanda

I locked it because it's over a year old. Any threads that are brought back from the dead (a year +) are generally locked.

Solicitations are deleted.

Personal attacks or off topic are deleted. If the thread turns into a war... the thread is locked.

I'm not sure how Ashley feels about posts with a high number of responses. Some communities have policies that when a thread reaches a certain number of posts it's locked so that it doesn't keep running in circles and newer posts dont get lost on the 2nd and 3rd page. Generally, between 200-300 posts threads are locked.

Ashley,
I am still going. I think I'll be done with 2008 before Christmas! :) There are so many posts with no content! Weird!

Haha Amanda you're still going huh? Well good luck!
@Jenni As for the threads that go over 200ish posts I do think it is good to lock them as well

Well it's just that some people search them if they want to read an answer to a question that has already been asked... but meah.

Oh, Jenni. I am deleting old posts. I am a 'cleaner' with junk like that! I like it; it's cathartic.

Wha? You aren't seriously deleting old posts?
Just lock old threads if you see them on the first page. You don't have to delete old posts. There's like... hundreds of thousands of them. lol

Thank you, Jenni. I am in the process of deleting old posts to try to prevent this from happening, but I see your point.
