I have a daughter who is just coming upto 13 months old. Now it is the summer I need her to wear sun hats when we go out and it's hot, but I find she won't keep them on even for a minute! I have tried taking two out with me and putting one on everytime she takes the other off but she won't give in! How can I get her to wear it? I don't want to buy those that you tie around their chins as I feel they are dangerous and also elasticated ones i feel the same about! x

Velcro doesn't always work unfortunately. My daughter figured out how to undo the velcro by 10 months. There was no way she was wearing a hat...no matter what kind we tried, she could get it off. The other day, I was goofing around with her and put her hat on my head just to make her laugh, and now she's obsessed with wearing it. Maybe try that?

My son is nine months old and we have the same problem already. I just keep putting it back on and try to give him something to play with so he's distracted from the hat. After a few minutes of him taking it off and me putting it back on he usually just gives in and leaves it alone. I don't use it all the time, but if we go to the beach or swimming or something I have to keep a hat on him because sunscreen is great but it doesn't offer the same protection. Besides, I wear a hat when I'm out in the sun so I want to get my kids in the habit too. I do use one with a strap but it is velcro so if he pulls on it it just comes undone and won't choke him. I did the same for my daughter, she's two now and knows that when we're going outside she needs her hat and just puts it on herself.

Well, good luck trying to keep a hat on her! My son would never (even as a tiny baby) keep a hat on. Even those cute little infant caps would be off in a second! As long as you keep sunscreen on her and don't keep her in the sun too long, she really doesn't "need" the hat. They look cute I know, but I've never seen a baby that would keep a hat on. I've been taking my son outside since he was around 4 months old and we just use sunscreen, even on his head (at 19 months he still has very little hair). When you get sunscreen, don't worry so much about it being "baby" sunscreen. Just make sure it's the thick stuff that has zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Unless your daughter is getting wet and being toweled off frequently, you really don't have to reapply. Here's an article from BabyCenter.com that explains it best (in my opinion):

Mostly, I think it's important that you don't take your daughter in the strongest sun of the day. We don't go outside between the hours of 11am and 2pm and we also don't stay out for longer than maybe half an hour or 45 minutes at a time. One last thing, just don't put it on her hands, as they will end up in her mouth and you don't want her eating the sunscreen lol Good luck Momma!
