15 Month Old Giving Up Afternoon Nap Not Morning One

[deleted account] ( 11 moms have responded )

Hi Guys,
Our 15 month old is trying to give up a nap which we should expect. The problem is that he wants to keep his morning nap - opposite of what "the average" toddler does. He likes to go back down by 9am after waking between 5:30-6:00am (ugh).

Didn't have this problem with my older one as she was more textbook in regards to napping. Should we just go with it or should we force him to stay up for a mid-day/early afternoon nap? My dilemma here is that I have to keep him up until I pick my daughter up from pre-k at 12:30. He can't even get into his bed until 1:00pm. It's tough.

Anyone have a similar problem? If so please share tips!

Thanks so much for reading!

Thread hopping here, I know this is an old one but I had to post a thank you! Yep my youngest is 13 months old and try as I might, I cannot get her to last the morning out. So I have let her tell me her schedule and she's up at around 5:45-6:30am, naps at 9:45am ( sometimes for 3 1/2+ hours!!) And then soldiers on until bedtime around 7pm. She's a little cranky for her bath, but not overly so, and she awakes in the morning all smiles and from her nap the same. She's blooming and thriving so I figure yep, that's what she needs. So glad to find this thread!!!!yay not alone. thanks Renee!!

Yup. My 14mo is doing the same thing. She wakes about 6-7am and then goes back down between 10-11. She is no longer taking her afternoon 2-3 nap. Not sure why she switched up but it doesn't bother me... other than she is REALLY cranky by bedtime. Good luck!

Hi there everyone

My LO is 14 months and she dropped her afternoon nap when she was 10 months old.
She goes to bed at 7pm asleep by 7.30pm and wakes around 6.30-7am very happy and energetic.
About 3 hours after being up she's ready for her morning nap and sleeps for 2 hour then that's it until 7pm.
I did try to shift her nap time as she misses all the tots groups in the mornings and there's hardly any on in the afternoons where I am, but not only did it mess up her mealtimes it also affected her night sleep so she was waking early hours and being totally miserable.
I now just go along with what she wants and needs and she's a much happier baby for it. I just keep thinking, it wont be forever and then I can take her to all the morning groups.
My health visitor agreed saying its best not to try to deprive them of sleep or to shift their sleep as this could make them really grumpy and develop sleeping problems, she said we must go with what our child wants as her body knows best so that's what I'm doing from now on :-)

My son's the same way. He goes to bed at 8pm is awake again between 6:30-7 am, plays a bit, has breakfast and then wants his nap around 9:30 -10am. It's rare that he takes an afternoon nap anymore. I tried to switch him to an afternoon nap but it didn't work so I let him nap his way. Although he gets cranky close to bedtime (what kid doesn't), it seems to be what works.

Why do you have to keep your son up? Can't he get in a short nap before you get your daughter? If he gets a short nap in the morning he may take a short nap in the afternoon as well.

My 14mo sleeps until 10:00 & goes back down for a nap around 1:30-3:30. He has always been a good sleeper. He even goes to bed at 8:30!

My 14 mos daughter is doing the same thing....just not consistently. Her typical schedule has been in bed around 7:30 and sleeps until 6:30-7am. Then she'd nap around 9am for roughly 1.5 hours...and then again by 1:30 for roughly 2 hours. Over the past 1.5 months, she has inconsistently taken a morning nap and then is very tough to get back to sleep in the afternoon. (Today, for example, it just took her over an hour to go to sleep for the afternoon. Occasionally, I've just given up and she hasn't slept at all...but that's rare.) So do I just need to give her more time between naps now or could she be starting to give up a nap? If she was doing this consistently, my decision would be much easier. Last week she took 2 beautiful naps every day so that makes me think she still needs 2 naps. Thanks for any feedback!

I am in precisely the same scenario - 15 month old waking at 5-6am latest, wanting to nap at 9:30am, refusing naps and just getting angry from 4pm-7pm when he finally goes to bed. We also have the pre-K dilemma for my older child. So far I've not found any solution, I'm just dealing with it. It can't last forever, right. My older child did exactly the same thing too.

Hi Wanda,

I have tried to give him a short am nap but it pushes his afternoon one too close too dinner. Then he wakes at 5 no fail. I figured out he was getting too much day sleep and so far it appears to have been the case. I am now doing the morning one and just letting him sleep as long as he needs. He is awake a good 7 hour stretch in the afternoon but he is happy enough and I am just going with it as you all have suggested. Thanks so much for responding!

My youngest has just turned one and only has one nap during the day, shes in bed 7.30-8pm and up anywhere between 6-7am she goes down around 11-11.30, just remember all kids are different maybe try and push it back to 10am or if he's not too grumpy come 5-6pm just let him go--he'll decide what he wants!!

My little boy is the same age. He goes to bed between 6.30 and 7.30pm depending but wakes up at 5am. I let him have a morning nap about 9ish and he sleeps for a couple of hours. I find this works for us. Good Luck :)
