My youngest does the same thing. There is not much you can do to stop the tantrums. That is part of being little and being frustrated or not getting your way. If you can use distraction, but sometimes you just have to let him tantrum and walk away. BIGGEST thing is DON'T react to the not breathing. It can be scary. But don't worry his body will make him breathe. If he sees that you react to the not breathing then he will do it more as it gets attention and possibly what he wants. If he sees that it is not getting a reaction then he will not do it as much. My daughter has done the not breathing thing since day one......she has strong lungs on her ;). I say she is a swimmer in the making! She is now 2 yrs old and will occasionally still hold her breath some, but it is MUCH less then what she used to do.

I suppose the first thing is to know that nothing bad can come from him holding his breath.. the absolute worst thing is that he'd hold his breath so ling he'll pass out - and inevitably start breathing again. But as far as the tantrums go, he's at the perfect age for it. It's normal!Annoying, stressful, worry-some, but normal. Just ignore any bad behavior he does and make a big deal about the good. He'll get the hint about how to behave. And also keep in mind that most toddlers get crabby because they want something but get frustrated cause they can't say anything or they don't know how. Either that or they're sleepy.
