17 Month Old Screams In The Car

My daughter is 17 months old and hates to ride in the car for more than 5 minutes. She screams the entire ride. I have ridden in the back with her, taken toys, books, snacks, etc. At this point nothing seems to work. It gets to the point where it isn't fun to take her anywhere, but I don't want to stop doing things because she doesn't like to be in the car seat. Any suggestions how to deal with this?

All 3 of my children weren't big fans of rear-facing. But 2 were switched to forward facing at 1 year old. Car seat laws changed for my youngest and she just recently started forward facing at 22 months. At least for mine, as soon as they began forward facing, they stopped fussing in the car.

So this is a tough one! Maybe her favourite music cd? I'm sure she'll get better with age. But what to do till then? I wish I could be more help. :(

what about putting her in the middle of the backseat? that way, she can see out the window, maybe that would calm her down a bit.

TRy singing wheels on the bus or old macdonald. My son loves them and forgets about whining as soon as we start. It's also great cause it's a learning opportunity who's on the bus? what sound do they make? What animals does old macdonald have? what sound do they make? it's a little early for taht yet but she'll be talking soon.

She could be carsick. Have you tried the wrist patches or behind the ear patch? They are both pressure point treatments-you could also try giving her half a childrens' dramamine or gravol an hour before you go out...

That's a good idea Brittney. We have her on the side because it's easier to get her in and out, but that might work. Thanks!

Thanks for your thoughts Jenni. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. Hopefully it's just a matter of time and her growing out of it. The music is a good idea, we'll give that a try.

She is very big, so we have her forward facing thinking that would help. No accidents or problems in the car. She is very active and I know she doesn't like being held down in the car seat. Once we get to our destination she is happy and fine.

Is she still in a rear facing car seat?

Did anything scary happen in the car? A small accident?
