2 1/2 year old hitting children in daycare every day!

I am told everyday by the daycare provider that my 2 1/2 year old son hits other children in his class for no reason and that he doesn't seem to understand the cause and affect it has. We have been experiencing this issue since he was 1 1/2 and. At first the daycare provider said it was normal behavior for his age but now it seems to be a problem. He is in a small class with 3 other toddlers and he is a very loving, smart child. He doesn't seem to do it when he is angry, but just because he can. The other day he went up to another child and dumped a box of toys on them. He is an only child and when he is home with me and my husband he will occasionally hit us to get our attention and will hit our cat from time to time. We give him time outs at home but at daycare they remove him and have him focus on something else. They have suggested it may be a sensory issue since he doesn't display this at home because it's just us and quite vs being in a noisey environment with other children. They also said he seems to have difficulty processing information, such as giving him more than one task to do. He will only do the first task and wait for the teacher to tell him what to do next and show him. I have made a phone call to his pediatrician but was wondering if anyone has experienced this type of behavior?

Only doing one task at a time is pretty normal for his age group. Also not understanding how others feel is normal. I'm not saying there isn't an issue just from my experiences these don't set off a red flag for me.

Did they give you a paper to take to the pediatrician? If not ask them for one.
