2 yo suddenly waking up in middle of night! Usually good sleeper.

My son is 2 1/2 and has always been a great sleeper, but within the last month he has started waking up twice a night...screaming for me! I go in and lay him back down and tell him, "No Buddy, it's dark. It's still nighttime, go back to sleep/" And he does...for a couple of hours. Repeat, repeat. This is totally a new thing. He has slept through the night since he was 2 months old...and boom! Up at night. Any advice? Should I let him cry it out? It's killing me and I am expecting again in a month...I have visions of being up with a newborn and him all night long!!

It doesn't sound like night terrors because it sounds like he is awake when you go in... Could it be teething (molars) or growing pains? My son has night issues with both of these and these are the only times he is a poor sleeper. When it's growing pains he is usually kind of thrashy with his legs (took me a while to notice) and I can rub his legs ( feet, ankles, calves, knees, thighs) and he calms and goes back to sleep. It does sometimes occur more then once a night. With the teething it is more of a guess, but it is one of those there is absolutely NOTHING else wrong guesses. I give him tylonal and he sleeps the rest of the night fine. I have always leaned toward the sleep training therorys and the child learning to "comfort" themselves and so if they do wake at night they can get back to sleep. This seems to be the norm for him, he is a REALLY good sleeper. But I have sort of figured out now that these are the times he really truly NEEDS me because he CAN"T get back to sleep on his own. By finding the cause and addressing it he can then get the rest he needs. Like I said it's kinda been trial and error (what's not with a toddler) but maybe this will give you another idea to work woth.

I know this post was from years ago but I was wondering if you ever found out what was going on?

I'm there with you! My son was always a good sleeper. Put him in bed and he'd drift off by himself. Lately, he's been screaming and crying when we put him to sleep and he also wakes up in the middle of the night. The only way he'll go back to sleep is if I bring him to my bed. After that, I can put him back in his crib if he's asleep.
