Hi there! My son is 20 months old, and he can say and associate approx 25 words. But I'm concerned. Many children his age are started to say complete sentences. We read and communicate all day, but do you guys have any other tips?

When my son was 22months we took hem into the Doctors because he would only say about 25 words or so, we were told every child is different and 1st born can take longer to talk because parents tend to jump when the child points or wants something. We put our son in a play group and that helped a little bit but our answer came in the form of a 3 year old boy. My son became friends with this older child and wanted to copy everything he said and did. The second play date they had my son was saying things he had never said before. My son is now 29months old and wont stop talking. Your son will get there too.

if he understands, then I wouldn't be too concerned. He may just not be a very outspoken kid, but he'll say them in his own time. Someone else suggested that some kids don't talk until they are sure they can pronounce the words, and I have noticed with my daughter that when I teach her a new word, if it's not an easy one to say she will whisper it to herself first. Then I'll repeat it, and then she'll say it out loud. She seems to like to be sure of herself before putting herself out there! :)

I'm looking forward to hearing him speak much much more for peace of mind, but I know I'll need a break from the jabbering jaws lol

I noticed that my daughter picked up words quickly when I described everything I was talking about with her...such as "oh look there is 4 brown cows, 1,2,3,4 that go moo" and everytime we saw cows I said this...it did get tiring but see now can associate things and count very well and doesn't have a prob. communicating by the way she is 26 months....she is older but I started this when she was about your son's age. Don't worry he will be talking and associating words before no time....and then you will be wishing for silence...lol:)

omg my son is the same exact way...hes super smart, he knows what your saying and talking about but he just doesnt have the words. my son is almost 20 months and he can point to his whole outside anatomy and can read cat and dog, but just doesnt say much else, my doc said its normal some kids wait till they can pronounce it just the way they think is perfect, and well you know these aquarian boys are observers so it'll come

Yeah I've heard that before. He's not in daycare, but a little more interaction with his peers would probably do him some good.

My daughter was more receptive to talking to other children than adults. But children under 2 don't usually talk in full sentences. Just 2 or 3 words strung together.
