3 yr old calling names when angry

[deleted account] ( 2 moms have responded )

I guess the only thing I need advice on right now is that fact when my 3 year old gets really mad and doesn't get her way, she will end up saying something like "stupid mommy!" I put her in time out for this for a few minutes and she always says sorry and that she loves me when it's over and hugs me and we move on, but is there a better way to get her to stop the name calling when she has a tantrum? Sometimes I feel the name calling coming on and warn her and she stops but is this just a learning situation where she will think "better not say that or i'll get a time out" type of thing?
Also I NEVER call her stupid or bad names but she has picked these phrases and names from somewhere else, maybe overhearing me talking to another person.

This is totally normal but annoying. They have major mood swings and pick it up at the park, TV, radio, other adults...sounds like you're handling it well though.

I give something specific to say instead. Encourage your child to say something like "I'm angry". It's not enough to say don't do this or don't say that. You need to give something they can do or say instead.
