My daughter turned 3 in May and had always been happy, very active and well rested up until a few months ago. She goes to bed around 5:30pm and will sleep until 6:00am, and she still will nap for about 1 1/2 hours each day. Lately she has been exhausted, doesn't want to do anything, has circles under her eyes and is pretty miserable much of the day. She has a totally different personality. The doctor says there is nothing wrong with her because she is eating, and still growing normally, but they didn't run any tests on her. Any ideas? I feel so bad for her and I know that something is wrong but don't know what to do for her...

I'd get a second opinion. If my child was suffering from this I'd definitely want some tests run and the fact that your doctor didn't even suggest any tests is baffling to me. Seek out another pediatrician's advice on the subject.

My three year old son is the same. He is constantly sleepy and is always falling asleep. Turns out he was low in iron and his tonsils were so swollen he needed surgery to remove them. Trouble is, six weeks after surgery and now that his iron levels are normal (after being on liquid iron) he is still the same. The doctor has run a bunch of tests and everything has come back normal. I am at a complete loss.

Thanks so much for the anemia tip, I don't know why I didn't think of that myself as I am also anemic. My daughter has turned into the typical picky 3 yr. old who doesn't eat any veggies or any meat (other than chicken) and this started right about the time she began acting so tired, she also drinks a ton of milk which I know blocks the absorption of iron. Don't know why my pediatrician didn't suggest this!

I would push for tests to be run. If they refuse then get a second or even third opinion. Mothers know their children best. I wish you the best.

P.S. Its pretty easy to control, if that is it, I still take my iron pills everyday.

I was the same way as a child, and they did blood tests and found I was anemic, maybe you should suggest to your doctor that you would like to request an iron test for anemia, not sure if thats it but the circles and the always tired do sound a lot like me!
