Can anyone recommend an allergy medicine that hasn't had bad side effects for their child? Pediatrician suggested trying Claritin or Zyrtec but I have heard about bad side effects like the child "being out of it" or having mood/behavioral and sleep issues. Thanks for any advice.

Everything you read online regarding bad side effects was correct. I don't know why pediatricians keep recommending it. My son was on Zyrtec and became an emotional wreck. Any type of steroid which is found in daily inhalers may have this effect as well. We took him off the Zyrtec and found a tremendous difference in his moods. I made sure the pets were out of his room, washed sheets routinely, had him shower every night, had a room air purifier in his room, etc. He will take puffs of albuterol when needed but that is rare now. Every once in a while I will give him a Clariton tablet that melts on your tongue. My other son has taken this as well with no side affects, but we do not use on a routine basis.

Any medication can have possible side effects with children, and because each child is different, it is difficult to say whether or not your child will have the side effect until you try it. If your pediatrician made a suggestion, you could try it. Ask for the correct dosage (based on your child's weight usually).

Other options could include non-drug usage...such as Neti pot or old wive's remedies. Look into what is out there and what sounds reasonable for your 2.5 year old. Ask your pediatrician if those are safe alternatives before trying anything, though.

Good luck!
