Child giving wrong answers to questions?

Hey guys! Appreciate the help! I have a son who is slightly speech delayed and is in speech therapy....(just 3). He is coming along in leaps and bounds is a social child and besides hyperactivity and limited eye contact has no other worrying symptoms of any apparent kind (toilet trained can ride a bike and do things other chidren at this age can do).
My question is that sometimes I will ask him a question, such as "what coulor is your shirt" and he will respond with "its a truck on my shirt??" If I ask again he then usualy gives the right anwer such as "green" but I dont know If he is guessing what im asking etc??? He answers yes and no questions. Follows instructions. He answers simple questions but not open ended or abstract such as "what did you do today?". When did your kids start answering these things and did anyone else have a problem with this?

My 6 year old won't even answer the question what did you do today! I get "I don't remember", or "I forget"? As far as answering the questions your asking him maybe speak to the speech pathologist and see if they are concerned about comprehension. Is it possible that he's just not paying attention the first time you ask him? I know as an adult sometimes I answer the question I think I'm being asked only to realize it's not the question at all.

my son is going to be three and occasionally he does this same thing. I taught him all his colors first and sometimes he gets distracted by that if we are counting or something like that and I say how many is this, he gets distracted and will says that's red mommy and i just repeat the question and he will give the right answer. not sure if this is helpful just my own experience.

Have you had his hearing checked. he may be miss hearing you or guessing what you are saying. Lots of children with speech delay have some form of hearing loss. Normally glue ear which is totally cureable. My daughter is 3.5 years old and has had 5 ear infections in 5 months and her speech has become a little odd. We are now waiting for ear gromits to be fitted to one ear as she does not react if I am talking to her on her right side and quite often answers a question wrongly, as she is guessing what I have said, yet if I sit on her left side she answers straight away.
